“ Mommy I don’t want you to go. Pretty please stay home and I will not sneak cookies in my bed. I want you to tell the army people I need you more than they do.” She held on to her mother neck squeezing tight. Sharon wiped her eyes trying to conceal the tears of having to again say goodbye to her husband and her precious Angel. This tour would only last for a year and a month. She would be done and her family will have them to herself.
“ Angel it is hard for mommy to go .I don’t like leaving you but it is mommy’s job. Angel folded her arms and pouted.
“ I don't like your job anymore. Oscar in my class told me you can get fired like his Daddy did from his job. Or quit for me.” Sharon chuckled because the minds of five-year-olds still amazed her.
“Angel, I promise I will be back soon Pinkies swear. When I come back I will be fire from my job so I’ll never leave you again. Mommy loves you so much. Now get some sleep” They lock their pinkies and she kisses it. Angel hugs Sharon again and kisses her.
“ I love you a trillion much. Good night mommy.” She skipped off but before she went in her room she looked back at her mommy. The fear settled in her that she would be telling her daughter a lie.
Sharon blew her a kiss and she closed the door. She began to cry because her truth was she was unsure if she would return home. Gerald slid in the bed next to her and began to kiss her passionately he loved his wife with his every feeling in his soul. This past month they spent incredible moments together. They had been together for ten years and he always knew when something was wrong with his wife.
“What’s wrong love?” He ran his fingers through her braids and kisses her.
“ I just hate leaving Angel and you again that’s all. I am going to miss you.” She kissed him and ran her finger across his face.”
“ I know baby.” He yawned from a long day wrapped his arms around her and legs so he could remember the feel of her body. He was burnt out and fell asleep. Sharon’s thoughts wonder, as she feared that she might not return home. The ifs settle in her thoughts and torture her. She walked over to her desk and wrote her goodbye letters just in case something happen to her. She walked in her daughter room and kissed her. She kneeled beside her and as always prays for her. The ritual had never change for her as she watched the people she loved.
The morning sunrise came quick as she was packed, dressed in her greens hesitate to leave her loved ones. The drive was silent as usual and her heart was heavy with grief. The closer she got to the airport the more tears begin to build. It was another year and a month away but she made a commitment but they where never easy. She kissed her family and hope this would not be her final goodbye she looked back one more time and whispered the words; “ I love you.”
A month later
Sharon was killed in the line of fire and his precious daughter asked,
“ Daddy, Mommy pinky swear she come back home and she didn’t. Why did God take her away?
?” He sat her in his lap and answered
“So she could watch over us. Your mommy can now protect up in heaven and she loves you.” She leaned her head on her daddy's shoulder.
“ Daddy read mommy's letter to me again.” He opens up the pink envelope and pulled out the letter. He adjusted the glassed on his face and he began to read the words to his daughter.
I love you a trillion, zillion, and gazillion much. I don't like leaving you but know I am always with you in your heart. You being in mommy's life make me strong and proud to fight in a war so you can grow up safe. I know you don't understand this but it is true. I need you take care of Daddy and make sure he doesn't fall asleep with glasses on. I need you to be good and when I come home I promise you can play and do my hair.
On this Memorial Day I wanted to tell this story for the women who serve and have died in the line of fire. Please let’s give our ladies a round of thank yous.
